About Our Organization
Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services is a non-profit clinic operated under the auspices of the Animal Protection Association. We offer affordable spay and neuter surgeries to pet owners of Memphis as well as to those in the tri-state area. We opened our dedicated spay and neuter clinic in October 2005, and began performing spay and neuter services two days per week. In 2008, the clinic added an additional surgery day each week, with a fourth day added in 2009.
The goal of Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services is to reduce pet overpopulation by addressing the root of the problem. To date, our clinic has performed over 16,000 spay or neuter procedures, which has potentially reduced the number of offspring that could have been produced by each unaltered animal and succeeding generations of litters, by the hundreds of thousands.
A recent study shows that spay and neuter programs are not only the most humane method of reducing the euthanasia rate, but are also the most cost effective option. According to Peter Marsh (Peter Marsh, Spay USA, Controlling Pet Population, 2008), the average cost of sterilizing an individual animal is $100, compared to an average cost of $300 to $500 per animal cared for at a shelter, and then either adopted out or euthanized and disposed. Consequently, every dollar spent on animal sterilization results in an average savings of three taxpayer dollars. Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services is committed to reducing the exorbitant euthanasia rate in Memphis in a manner that is as cost effective as it is humane.
